Community

BY Meyia Carrasco

I’m always cliqued up cus I keep my family closest to me.

We grew up oppressed, in poverty, so coming up, they gon’ be

Calling us “New Money.”

I’m unapologetically me, I’m addressing the oppressed with

The remedy, I’m doing things quite strategically—maybe that’s

Why they named me a champion in my community.

Poverty, wealth, tech, culture, we operate quite

Differently.

Motivated by the strangers, teachers, and hustlers, my city’s

Rooting for and riding wit’ me.

Born and raised in San José—supposedly the most prosperous

City in da county…

Yet, youth are exploited, people and drugs are trafficked

Daily. Folks sleepin on the streets. My people and I ain’t

Doing good mentally.

The youth need us, so I’m hustling daily. I’m known for

Strengthening and uplifting my community.

The youth are taking over the city.

In all reality, I would pledge peace with my all, enemies, if it

Resulted in preserving our legacy.

To all my enemies: We gotta handle much differently—

authentically.

The president is rearranging history, tryna erase you and

me.

(And now it’s back to me)

I’m with the all-stars, making history.

I’m connecting the dots, strengthening our solidarity.

So Ima keep being Movie Maker Meyia, documenting history.

Through all my lenses creatively.

To all my people, thank you for loving and supporting me.

Quite unconditionally.

I’m pouring back into my community wholeheartedly.
